Mr. Burns has over 30 years of experience in intellectual property.  Until his retirement, Mr. Burns spent over 20 years as Senior Patent Counsel/Associate General Counsel-Patents at Johnson & Johnson in the field of medical devices and in-vitro diagnostics.  At Johnson & Johnson, Mr. Burns was responsible for all aspects of patent protection of a product from conception through development and finally product launch.  These activities included patent application preparation, freedom to operate analysis for various product iterations and product clearance analysis, including opinion drafting, for a product before its commercial launch.  Supporting the operating companies R&D activities, included activities such as patent and technology licensing and other forms of technology-related agreements such as material transfer agreements and supply agreements.  Technologies Mr. Burns was responsible for included medical sterilization systems, ENT related instruments and related mapping/guidance systems, electrophysiology catheters, diagnostic related systems, such as mainframe analyzers, point of care devices, chemistry assays as well as immunoassays.

Prior to Johnson & Johnson, Mr. Burns was a law clerk/associate for over 8 years at Foley & Larnder working in the fields of polymers, small molecule pharmaceuticals, transdermal drug delivery, bone substitutes, medical devices and systems, and other technologies.  Mr. Burns started his intellectual property career as an Examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, examining in technologies such as semi-conductor etching, coating, glass making and paper making.
