Bryan F. Erickson has almost 20 years of experience in intellectual property law. Mr. Erickson’s practice includes counseling clients regarding the procurement, enforcement, licensing, and assessment of patents, particularly in the electrical, electronic, software, medical device, and aerospace fields.  Representative technologies include:

•  machine learning, NLU, and artificial intelligence software and specialized hardware

•  advanced laser and plasma applications

•  advanced power electronics and controllers, for spacecraft, plasma processing chambers, semiconductor processing, automotive, and LED

•  chip-level encryption and cryptography, including for military applications

•  systems and components for radar, aircraft, satellites, and spacecraft

•  optical-electronic and laser applications for aerospace navigation systems

•  heavy engineering equipment for spacecraft integration and nuclear processing

•  marine radar systems for ocean-going vessels

•  video and audio encoding, decoding, and processing, including H.265 / HEVC and other standards-essential patents

•  radiation detection and mitigation circuits and systems

Mr. Erickson has substantial international experience, filing PCT and other international patent applications, serving international clients, and addressing applicable export control laws and regulations, across a few dozen nations in Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa, occasionally advising international clients and partners in their native languages.  Mr. Erickson also has experience drafting and advising regarding: patent appeals, intellectual property license contracts, patent validity and infringement opinions, patentability reports, freedom-to-practice assessments, complex post-litigation patent portfolio cross-licensing settlement agreement compliance, intellectual property aspects of mergers and acquisition contracts, trademarks, and complex U.S. federal contracts under the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR).

Mr. Erickson also has legal experience in various areas of law outside of intellectual property, and in business and software engineering roles at technology startup companies, and performing research in astrophysics.  Mr. Erickson has been actively involved in technology startup company accelerator and investment entities, and has taken additional coursework in computer science in recent years.  Mr. Erickson has performed volunteer service for Blanchet House of Hospitality, Stanford University Computer Science Department, and NASA.
